Description

Nothing on the 21 Islands is normal. Not even the 1 foot long Aspicycus Versialis, the Wooly Wasp, and its cousins. Even the males of this species are dangerous. They have a venomous spike in place of a stinger. The venom in their tail spikes can cause severe localized pain for a short time, or delirium in high amounts. If handled, males can also release a powerful irritant from glands in their mouths. Females have only a single venom, connected to conventional stingers, but their venom causes such intense, prolonged pain, that some have asked to be killed rather than to have to endure it.

So why do both sexes have such ungodly weaponry? The answer is their offspring. Unlike most wasps species, male wooly wasps stick around after "sowing their oats", and they don't do so wildly. Instead, these social wasps form pairs, which mate for life, and in turn, several pairs nest in a shared mound of dirt. The males are attentive fathers, and do much of the hunting and defend the nest from predators. This is why they are so heavily armoured.

P.S. if that was weird enough, get a load of this! Even their larvae have legs and eyes, and move freely around in the nest; no brood cells!
